About the race
Swimming from Getaria to Zarautz in the Cantabrian Sea, climbing Meagas three times and running through the crowds on the seafront: the Zarautz Triathlon (Zarauzko Triatloia) is one of the oldest and most prestigious middle-distance triathlons in Spain. It has been held since 1987 and has one of the most intense atmospheres on the calendar. General information: - The 2027 edition will be held on Saturday 2027-06-12, with the women's start at 14:00 and the men's at 14:10. - It is organised by Zarauzko Triatloi Elkartea under the rules of the Basque Triathlon Federation. - A valid FETRI licence is mandatory; non-federated athletes cannot take part. - Categories are Under 23, V1, V2 and V3. Why it is special: - The course is tough and spectacular: an open-water swim between two coastal towns, a bike course with ramps of up to 20%, and a run through the streets of Zarautz with an unmatched atmosphere. - It offers 23,600 € in prize money. The men's and women's winners take 6,000 € each, and it attracts top-level triathletes. - The top ten men and women get free entry to the next edition, and the top twenty secure a place for three editions. Course: - Swim: 2.8 km in open water, from Getaria beach to Zarautz. Buses run from the transition area to the start. - Bike: 80 km over two laps (32.2 km and 47.8 km), with three climbs of Meagas, an ascent of about 3.9 km. Drafting is not allowed. - Run: 20 km, three laps of 6.2 km around Zarautz, finishing in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento. Transition is on the Malecón. If the sea makes swimming impossible, the race becomes a duathlon; if the bike leg cannot go ahead, it becomes an aquathlon. Timetable: in the previous edition the programme was as follows: - Friday: bib pickup from 17:00 to 20:00. - Saturday: - bib pickup from 09:00 to 10:30; - transition and bag drop from 11:00 to 13:15; - buses to Getaria from 12:00 to 13:15; - starts at 14:00 and 14:10; - first finishers around 18:00; - awards at 19:30. The cut-offs are as follows: - Swim: 1 h 10 min for women and 1 h for men. - Bike: km 20.5 at 15:57, km 32.2 at 16:21, km 62.2 (Zumaia) at 17:41 and transition entry at 18:30. - Run: km 14 at 20:15. There is no start corral by finishing time: there is one women's start and one men's start. Registration and prices: registration is managed by the Basque Triathlon Federation on RockTheSport. For 2027 the listed registration period runs from 2026-10-30 to 2026-11-05, with a fee of 200 €. In the previous edition entry was by pre-registration (3 €) and draw, so demand exceeds the available places. Bib pickup: to collect your bib you must show your physical licence or ID. The race bag includes a commemorative T-shirt, bib, swim cap, stickers and wristband. If you rent a chip, you collect it at the transition entrance. There is no expo, although there is a bike mechanic service at the transition entrance. Services and aid stations: - Bag storage on the second floor of the Zarautz Market, about 150 m from transition. - Massage tent. - Showers at the Oteiza Lizeoa-Antoniano. - Post-race tent next to the finish. - On the bike there are aid stations at Meagas (km 1.8, 34 and 74) and the Zumaia roundabout (km 62), with water, sports drink, gels, bars and bananas. - On the run there are aid stations on Calle Higer and at Parke Ikastola, with water, Coca-Cola, sports drink, gels, bars and fruit. Bib exchange: the regulations do not provide for a name change or a refund in case of disqualification or cancellation. No official waiting list has been announced. Alternatives to get a bib: keep an eye on the registration period, which is very short. If you don't get a place, join the waiting list on Bibready by activating a bib alert. Before any bib exchange on Bibready, ask the organiser whether a change of holder is allowed. FAQ: - When is it? On 2027-06-12 at 14:00. - What are the distances? 2.8 km swim, 80 km bike and 20 km run. - Do I need a licence? Yes, a FETRI licence is mandatory. - How much does it cost? 200 € according to RockTheSport. - Is there prize money? Yes, 23,600 € in total.
Zarautz Triathlon name change
The regulations of the Zarautz Triathlon do not provide for a name change or bib transfer, and the organiser is not obliged to refund or compensate in case of disqualification, partial or total cancellation, or course changes. Places are allocated through the Basque Triathlon Federation on RockTheSport (in the previous edition by pre-registration and draw), every athlete must hold a valid FETRI licence, and the licence or ID must be shown at bib pickup and at the transition check-in, so do not count on handing your place to someone else. Before arranging any bib exchange on Bibready, ask the organiser ([email protected]) whether a change of holder is possible. If places run out, join the waiting list on Bibready by activating a bib alert for the Zarautz Triathlon to be notified if a place becomes available.
