Climbing Udalatx, the most recognisable mountain in the Alto Deba, from the village square and back again: the Arrasate-Udalatx Mountain Race (Arrasate-Udalatx Mendi Lasterketa) is one of the most eagerly awaited winter trail races in Gipuzkoa. It is organised by the Mondraitz club in Arrasate-Mondragón, and 2027 is its 11th edition. General information: - The race is on Saturday 2027-02-27, starting and finishing in the Herriko Plaza of Arrasate. - There is a single 22 km course with 1,400 m of elevation gain. - The limit is 400 runners aged 18 and over. Of those bibs, 100 are reserved for people from Arrasate-Mondragón. - Categories are Youth (18-22), Senior (23-44) and Veterans (45 and over), for men and women. Why it is special: - It is a mountain race with a village feel: it starts and finishes in the square, organised by a local club devoted to its surroundings. - The course reaches the summit of Udalatx, one of the most iconic peaks in the Basque Country. - Demand exceeds supply, so bibs are allocated by draw. With only 400 places, getting one is already part of the challenge. - It comes in mid-winter, at the start of the season, and is a good fitness test. Course: the race covers 22 km on tracks and mountain trails, some of them technical, with 1,400 m of elevation gain. It passes Anporreta, Meatzerreka, Udala and the summit of Udalatx before returning to Arrasate. There are 5 aid stations on course and another at the finish. The organiser publishes the map, profile, GPX track and a Strava route. The course is marked and must be followed exactly, and it may be changed for safety reasons.
