About the race
Volcanoes, Canary pine forest, the summits of the Caldera de Taburiente and the Atlantic always in sight: the Transvulcania Marathon 43K is part of Transvulcania, the race that made La Palma one of the world capitals of trail running. General information: - The 17th edition of Transvulcania runs from 2027-05-06 to 2027-05-08, and this race takes place on Saturday 2027-05-08. - It is promoted by the Cabildo de La Palma and organised by the public company SODEPAL. - There are 900 places. - To enter you must prove you have finished a mountain race of at least 20 km since 2026-01-01. The start is in corrals assigned by the ITRA score given at registration. Why it is special: - It is a world-class race, with runners from more than fifty countries. - When registration opened for 2027, more than 2,000 people signed up in under 24 hours. - It runs almost entirely on La Palma's trail network, in a Biosphere Reserve with unique volcanic scenery. - Top finishers earn prizes of up to 1,000 €. Poles are restricted in some areas of the National Park. Course: Transvulcania's routes are published with their GPX tracks on the official website. This one covers 43.2 km with 1,884 m of elevation gain and 3,329 m of loss, starting at Refugio de El Pilar (El Paso) and finishing at Puerto de Tazacorte. It starts at the Refugio de El Pilar in El Paso, at about 1,450 m, and follows the GR 131 Ruta del Bastón along the summits around the Caldera de Taburiente to the Roque de los Muchachos, at about 2,426 m. From there a brutal descent begins, down to the beach at Puerto de Tazacorte at sea level. The course has far more descent than climbing, and the organiser warns that the final descent demands special fitness. There are aid stations at El Reventón (km 6.8), Pico de la Cruz (km 21.7), Roque de los Muchachos (km 25.9) and Torre de El Time (km 35.9), plus the finish at Puerto de Tazacorte. The Roque de los Muchachos cut-off is at 13:00. The organiser recommends carrying the track on a GPS watch. Timetable: the start is at 06:00 on 2027-05-08 and the time limit is 10 hours (finish closes at 16:00). Anyone who does not leave a checkpoint before its cut-off is out of the race. Each runner starts in the corral matching their ITRA score; those without one go to the last corrals. Registration and prices: registration is on the official website, with online payment only. The general fee is 65 € in the first tier, until the first 500 places are taken, and 85 € after that. La Palma residents pay 45 € and 65 €. To get the resident discount you must prove you were born on La Palma or have been registered there for at least two years. Once places sell out, an official reserve list opens. Bib pickup: bib collection runs from 2027-05-05 to 2027-05-07, at a place and times to be announced by the organiser. Only the runner can collect it, with ID or passport, and authorisations are not accepted. No bibs are handed out at the start line. During race week, Los Llanos de Aridane becomes the hub of the Transvulcania atmosphere, although no specific expo has been announced. Mandatory gear: a hydration system of at least 1 L, a 200-lumen headlamp, a 2 x 1 m thermal blanket, a charged phone switched on (not in airplane mode), a collapsible cup and a whistle. At El Reventón you must leave with 1 L of fluid. Depending on the weather, a cold or heat kit may be activated. Services: - Drinks and food at the aid stations. - Transport to the start and from the finish. - Transfer of your personal bag from the start to the finish. - Chip and/or GPS timing. - Accident insurance. - A runner's bag with a commemorative gift. - A finisher medal for anyone who finishes within the time limit. - At the main finish in Los Llanos de Aridane there is physiotherapy, podiatry and showers. Bib exchange: registration is personal and non-transferable, and passing on a bib is punished with disqualification and a two-edition ban. You can, however, change distance or withdraw with a partial refund: 80% until 2026-12-31 and 50% until 2027-04-08. In short, no name change or bib change is possible, so the waiting lists (the official one and Bibready's) are the only way to get a place once it sells out. Alternatives to get a bib: if you didn't get a place, join the official reserve list. You can also join the waiting list on Bibready with a bib alert to stay up to date. Bib exchange on Bibready is not possible for this race. FAQ: - When is it? On 2027-05-08 at 06:00. - How much climbing is there? 1,884 m of gain over 43.2 km. - What is the time limit? 10 hours (finish closes at 16:00). - Can I transfer my bib? No, it is prohibited. - Is there a medal? Yes, for all finishers.
Transvulcania Marathon 43K name change
The Transvulcania Marathon 43K does not allow a name change or bib transfer: registration is personal and non-transferable, bibs are only handed to the registered runner with ID (no authorisations), and passing a bib to someone else means disqualification and a two-edition ban for both runners. For that reason a bib exchange on Bibready is not possible for this race. What you can do is change to another distance (paying or being refunded the difference) or cancel: 80% is refunded until 2026-12-31, 50% until 2027-04-08 at 12:00, and nothing after that. Once places sell out, the organiser runs an official reserve list to fill withdrawals. If you're looking for a place, besides the official list you can join the waiting list on Bibready by activating a bib alert for the Transvulcania Marathon 43K, to be notified of news about the race.
