Volcanoes, Canary pine forest, the summits of the Caldera de Taburiente and the Atlantic always in sight: the Transvulcania 12K Light is part of Transvulcania, the race that made La Palma one of the world capitals of trail running. General information: - The 17th edition of Transvulcania runs from 2027-05-06 to 2027-05-08, and this race takes place on Saturday 2027-05-08. - It is promoted by the Cabildo de La Palma and organised by the public company SODEPAL. - There are 500 places. - No previous race is required. Runners aged 16 and over can take part, with parental authorisation for minors. Why it is special: - It is a world-class race, with runners from more than fifty countries. - When registration opened for 2027, more than 2,000 people signed up in under 24 hours. - It runs almost entirely on La Palma's trail network, in a Biosphere Reserve with unique volcanic scenery. - Top finishers earn prizes of up to 500 €. Course: Transvulcania's routes are published with their GPX tracks on the official website. This one covers 11.6 km with 721 m of elevation gain and 721 m of loss, starting at Refugio de El Pilar (El Paso) and finishing at Refugio de El Pilar (El Paso). It is a loop designed for anyone wanting to start trail running in a historic setting. It leaves the Refugio de El Pilar, at 1,461 m, on a wide, comfortable track (PR LP-16) to the Llano de las Moscas (km 4). There a climb of about 3 km begins (SL EP-105) through the San Juan lava flows and Canary pine forest, with spectacular views of the island's east side. It then joins the ultra and half marathon courses and descends the GR 131 Ruta de los Volcanes to the finish at El Pilar. There is a single drinks station at the Llano de las Moscas (km 4), plus the finish. The organiser recommends carrying the track on a GPS watch. Timetable: the start is at 10:30 on 2027-05-08 and the time limit is 3.5 hours (finish closes at 14:00). Anyone who does not leave a checkpoint before its cut-off is out of the race. There is no start corral by finishing time: it is a single start. Registration and prices: registration is on the official website, with online payment only. It only has a second-tier price: 55 € general and 35 € for La Palma residents. To get the resident discount you must prove you were born on La Palma or have been registered there for at least two years. Once places sell out, an official reserve list opens. Bib pickup: bib collection runs from 2027-05-05 to 2027-05-07, at a place and times to be announced by the organiser. Only the runner can collect it, with ID or passport, and authorisations are not accepted. No bibs are handed out at the start line. During race week, Los Llanos de Aridane becomes the hub of the Transvulcania atmosphere, although no specific expo has been announced. Mandatory gear: a thermal blanket, a charged phone switched on, a reusable cup or bottle and a whistle. Depending on the weather, a cold or heat kit may be activated.
