About the race
The São Paulo International Half Marathon isn't a name that travels far outside Brazil, but inside the country it's an institution: now in its 20th edition, it has become one of the benchmark races on the national athletics calendar, with a format few urban races can claim, since it brings together three distances (21K, 10K and 5K) under the same starting gun on a single morning, turning the event into a genuine popular running festival for São Paulo as much as an elite competition. The venue chosen for the past five consecutive editions is part of the appeal in itself: start and finish sit in the parking lot of Shopping Metrô Itaquera, in São Paulo's eastern zone, just steps from the Corinthians-Itaquera train station and, crucially, right next to the Itaquerão, the Corinthians stadium that hosted the opening match of the 2014 World Cup. Running a half marathon with that giant stand in the background, in a working-class, vibrant neighbourhood very different from São Paulo's usual postcard circuit (Ibirapuera, Avenida Paulista), gives the race its own identity, grittier and less polished than the city's other major events. The course has one detail few runners forget: the 21K route passes twice through the Túnel Jornalista Odon Pereira, at kilometres 9 and 11, literally taking athletes underground mid-effort in a stretch closed off from traffic that completely changes the soundscape of the race — the organisers themselves highlight in their own promotional material how the echo of thousands of footsteps and breaths bouncing off the concrete becomes a sensory experience of its own. The route, with out-and-back stretches along Avenida José Pinheiro Borges and Avenida Calim Eid, isn't flat like Berlin; it mixes level ground with some urban rises, so this isn't a record-hunting track but a race that rewards tactical pacing. The organisers, Yescom, working under the supervision of the São Paulo State Athletics Federation (FPA), split runners into clearly defined categories: wheelchair athletes, women's and men's elite, athletes with disabilities, Premium Wave and General Wave. The Premium Wave is the curious one: for a pricier kit (shirt, bottle, bib, medal), runners also buy the right to start further forward in the corral — a kind of fast-track starting lane that in European races is usually reserved for certified times or lottery winners, but is sold here outright as a product.Another very Brazilian trait of this race is its active crusade against the "corredor pipoca" (the unregistered, bib-less runner who sneaks into the course). The rulebook devotes an entire section, almost a manifesto, explaining how the unregistered runner drives up entry fees and overloads water and aid stations, even risking that gels or water run out for those who paid for their bib, and it actively encourages people to report by email anyone who sells or gives away their number. It's a cultural battle barely mentioned in European races, yet a central topic in every Brazilian mass-participation rulebook. One last, friendlier detail to close on: runners aged 60 or over get a 50% discount on registration and an exclusive check-in counter at kit pick-up to speed up their process — an inclusive touch rarely seen in events of this scale.
