About the race
The KLM Norte Sur Race has spent sixteen editions proving that Madrid can also host a 10K with the soul of a derby: here you're not just running for your own personal best, you're automatically enrolled on one of two sides, North or South, and the final result isn't decided by who crosses the line first, but by each team's average net time across every one of its runners. It's a simple idea that completely changes the race experience: suddenly your individual effort also counts toward a bigger "selection," and the starting atmosphere has more in common with a football derby than a typical mass-participation race. The course is, quite literally, the concept turned into asphalt. The start is on Calle Mateo Inurria, next to Plaza de Castilla, in the city's north, and the finish on Avenida de Menéndez Pelayo, at the gates of El Retiro park, in the south. Ten kilometres certified by the Royal Spanish Athletics Federation (RFEA), running across Madrid from end to end with the roads completely closed to traffic, making it a serious option for chasing a personal best before the summer heat arrives. The race takes place on Sunday, June 21, 2026, at 8:30am, with a 1 hour 30 minute time limit.Behind the organisation sits a sponsor few mass-participation races can boast: KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, which lends its name to the event and uses it as a sustainability showcase, with eco-fabric shirts, a priority on clean energy sources, reduced plastic use, non-polluting vehicles, and recyclable signage. The crossover between airline and popular race reaches an almost unexpected point: anyone who registers can use a 10% discount code on KLM, Air France, or Delta flights, valid until March 2027, so finishing the 10K can, without much exaggeration, become the first step toward an actual trip to the "North" or "South" of the planet. On the logistics side, the race pays particular attention to details that runners often suffer through in larger events: the bag-drop service is completely free (with a double-wristband system and vans that transport bags from the start at Plaza de Castilla all the way to the finish area near El Retiro), there's liquid aid at kilometre 5 and at the finish, and every runner who crosses the line receives a finisher medal. Bib and official shirt pick-up happens in the days before the race (Friday June 19 and Saturday June 20) at the RafaelHoteles Atocha, with nothing handed out on race day itself, so there's no room for last-minute mishaps. Race photos are managed by KST Fotografía with a privacy-first system: each runner only accesses their own images via their phone, with no way for third parties to view or buy other participants' photos.Registration is capped at 8,000 bibs and has sold out in previous editions, with tiered pricing: 17€ until May 4 and 18€ from May 5 until registration closes. One detail worth keeping in mind if you're racing for your team: the rulebook doesn't literally use the word "non-transferable," but running with someone else's bib is explicitly listed as grounds for disqualification, so in practice the effect is the same as in any race with a name-tied bib.
KLM North South Race name change
The rulebook does not explicitly call the bib "non-transferable," but running with another participant's bib is explicitly listed as grounds for disqualification, which functions as a de facto ban on transfers.
