About the race

BERLIN
The event

The Berlin Half Marathon isn't just another race on the European calendar — it's the world's de facto season-opener for distance running, and it carries the weight of four decades of history behind it. Born in 1984 in West Berlin and merged in 1990 with East Berlin's Friedenslauf after the fall of the Wall, this race has reunification written into its DNA: it's the sporting symbol of a city that came back together one stride at a time. Today it brings together more than 40,000 athletes from 135 nationalities, making it one of the most popular and crowded half marathons on the planet, and a proud member of the exclusive SuperHalfs circuit alongside Lisbon, Prague, Copenhagen, Cardiff and Valencia.Berlin is famous worldwide as the city of records, a reputation built largely on its full marathon, where the men's world record has fallen a remarkable thirteen times. But that same genetic code of flat, fast tarmac — barely 4.3 metres of elevation change across the entire 21.0975 km course — runs through its little sister too. The Berlin Half Marathon is rightfully synonymous with personal bests: the course record stands at 58:42, and in recent editions runners like Amanal Petros have smashed German national records right through the heart of the city. You don't need to be elite to feel that magic of speed; the course is built so that every runner, from first-timer to professional, can find their best version of themselves. And then there's the finish. If there's one moment that explains why so many runners dream of Berlin as their race, it's that final stretch down Straße des 17. Juni, when the silhouette of the Brandenburg Gate starts to take shape in the distance. It's not just a historic monument to run past — it's the unmistakable sign that the finish line is barely a hundred metres away. That instant — legs already burning, arms beginning to rise almost on their own, the crowd roaring through that final stretch — is amplified by the roughly 40 live bands lining the course, turning the closing kilometres into a genuine explosion of collective emotion. Passing under the Brandenburg Gate and knowing you've made it is, for thousands of runners, the very reason they keep coming back year after year.
