About the race

The event

Pure trail running in a village in the province of Zaragoza: the Desafío Herrerino 16K runs through the hills around Herrera de los Navarros, between the Hermitage of the Virgen de la Sierra and the banks of the Huerva river. It is a medium-difficulty mountain race, with steep climbs through green, wooded landscape, and part of one of the liveliest trail events in Aragon. General information: - The 11th edition of the Desafío Herrerino will take place on Saturday 2027-05-08. The organiser has announced it on Instagram, although the website does not show it yet. - It is organised by the Herrera de los Navarros town council. - The race began in 2015 and is held every year, traditionally on the first Saturday of May, except in 2020 and 2021 because of the pandemic. - There are 150 bibs. The organiser may move places between distances if one does not fill and another has more demand. - The men's and women's categories are Absolute (aged 16 and over), Veterans A (40 to 49), Veterans B (50 and over) and Local. Why it is special: - It is a village race in the best sense: the whole of Herrera gets behind it, and afterwards every entrant gets a free home-cooked communal meal at the municipal sports hall. - The setting is beautiful and little known: the Sierra de Herrera, the Hermitage of the Virgen de la Sierra and the trails along the Huerva. - There are trophies for the top three in each category, dedicated prizes for local runners and gifts for participants. - In recent editions it was part of the Copa Ibérica Trail, which drew runners from outside Aragon. Course: the routes for every distance can be viewed on Wikiloc. The race covers about 16 km on forest tracks, narrow paths and trails running alongside the Huerva river, through vegetation and with steep climbs. In the 2024 edition this distance had about 500 m of elevation gain. It is a loop starting and finishing at the municipal sports hall, and the track can be viewed on Wikiloc. There are 4 aid stations on course and a final one at the finish. The start and finish are at the municipal sports hall on Calle Barranquillo. Timetable: in the previous edition the Desafío Herrerino 16K started at 09:45. The same day, the hiking route started at 08:30 and the other races during the morning. The 2027 times will be confirmed later. It is a single start, with no start corral by finishing time. The organiser has not published time limits. Registration and prices: in recent editions registration was on Avaibook Sports. In 2026 it was open from 2026-01-01 to 2026-04-26. Prices for 2027 have not been published yet. Keep an eye out for the opening, as places are limited. Bib pickup: the place and times for bib collection will be announced closer to the date. It usually takes place at the municipal sports hall on race morning. There is no expo; the sports hall is the meeting point. Services: - Group accident insurance for all participants. - Aid stations on course and at the finish. - Parking, changing rooms and showers at the municipal sports hall. - A free communal meal for all entrants after the prize-giving. The organiser recommends a medical check-up or stress test before racing. Tips: although the distance is not extreme, the climbs are steep and part of the course is on narrow trails, so train for climbing and descents. Check the track on Wikiloc before the race, and stay for the meal: it is an essential part of the experience. Bib exchange: the regulations do not say whether a change of holder is allowed, nor do they set out refund terms. No official waiting list has been announced. Until the organiser confirms whether a name change or bib change is accepted, the waiting lists (Bibready's and any official list that opens) are the best option if places sell out. Alternatives to get a bib: register as soon as entries open. If bibs sell out, join the waiting list on Bibready with a bib alert. Before any bib exchange on Bibready, ask the organiser whether changes are accepted. FAQ: - When is it? On 2027-05-08, according to the organiser's announcement. - How long is it? About 16 km. - How much climbing is there? About 500 m of gain, based on the 2024 edition. - Is there food at the end? Yes, free for all entrants. - Are there showers? Yes, at the municipal sports hall.

Desafío Herrerino 16K name change

The regulations of the Desafío Herrerino 16K do not say whether a name change or bib transfer is possible, nor do they set out refund conditions, so do not count on handing your place to someone else and never run with someone else's bib. Before arranging any bib exchange on Bibready, ask the organiser (Ayuntamiento de Herrera de los Navarros, 976 14 30 01) whether a change of holder is accepted for 2027. Places are limited and registration closed about two weeks before the race in the previous edition; no official waiting list has been announced, so if you're looking for a bib, join the waiting list on Bibready by activating a bib alert for the Desafío Herrerino 16K.
