About the race
There are mornings when Madrid beats to the rhythm of running feet. On a spring Sunday, with April light bathing Paseo de Recoletos and the National Library looking on, 30,000 runners fill the centre of the capital for the Movistar Madrid Half Marathon, the city's most traditional and popular mass-participation race. Music, nerves, hugs and thousands of bibs waiting for the starting gun that opens 21.097 kilometres through Madrid's most iconic streets.A route that is a journey through the cityRunning the Movistar Madrid Half Marathon means seeing the capital as never before, its great avenues closed to traffic and handed over to runners. The start, in front of the National Library, sends the race along the central lanes of Paseo de la Castellana, the city's main artery, past Plaza de Emilio Castelar and Glorieta de Gregorio Marañón to Plaza de Castilla, crowned by the leaning KIO Towers. The route back south follows the lively Calle Bravo Murillo and Glorieta de Cuatro Caminos, then continues along Raimundo Fernández Villaverde, crossing the overpass above the Castellana, Joaquín Costa, Plaza de la República Argentina and Francisco Silvela, through the Avenida de América tunnel and Manuel Becerra. The second half is a parade of postcards. Along Doctor Esquerdo, O'Donnell and Calle de Alcalá, runners circle the majestic Puerta de Alcalá in Plaza de la Independencia. Next come the elegant Salamanca district via Serrano and Juan Bravo, the crossing above the Castellana on Eduardo Dato and Glorieta de Rubén Darío, then Almagro, Alonso Martínez, Sagasta and Bilbao. The final stretch enters the heart of old Madrid: Gran Vía, Montera and Puerta del Sol, Spain's kilometre zero. Carrera de San Jerónimo leads down to the Neptune fountain, and Paseo del Prado, lined with world-famous museums, takes runners to Plaza de Cibeles and a final push along Recoletos to the finish in front of the National Library.A course with characterThe course has a personality of its own: the first part climbs towards the north of the city, and the second offers favourable stretches that invite you to open up your stride and speed towards the historic centre. It rewards a cool head and smart pacing, and saves an unforgettable finish for those who keep something in reserve for the final kilometres.National and international prestigeIn 2027 the Movistar Madrid Half Marathon celebrates its 26th edition. Its course is certified by the Royal Spanish Athletics Federation, run under World Athletics rules, listed on the AIMS calendar and holds the World Athletics Label. Spanish and international elite athletes compete for prize money and the course records (59:38 for men and 1:07:22 for women), alongside thousands of amateur runners chasing a personal best or celebrating their first half marathon. It is organised by Agrupación Deportiva Marathon, Atresmedia and Sport Life Ibérica, with the support of Madrid City Council.A start designed for every paceThe start is organised in waves based on the target time given at registration, so every runner has room from the first metre. Corrals under 1h30 require an official result from the past two years. Identified pacers run net times of 1h20, 1h25, 1h30, 1h35, 1h40, 1h45, 1h50, 1h55, 2h00, 2h05 and 2h10. Every kilometre is marked, with timing checkpoints at the start and at km 5, 10 and 15, and the time limit is 3 hours. Wheelchair athletes start at 9:10, and the main race sets off at 9:15.Big-race servicesThere are water stations at approximately km 5, 10 and 15, with drinks and food at the finish. A free bag drop is available at Plaza de Colón from 8:00, with toilets at the start, finish and after the final refreshment area. The organisation provides medical assistance along the course, a physiotherapy and podiatry service for injured runners and a sweep vehicle. All participants are covered by civil liability and accident insurance.Memories that lastEvery finisher receives a commemorative medal, which can be engraved with their finish time. Registration includes bib-chip and official T-shirt, collected at the Runner's Expo from 1 to 3 April, a meeting point for runners in the days before the race. With the free official app, family and friends can follow you in real time. Afterwards you can download your finish-line video and official certificate free of charge, showing your overall and category position, official time and average pace, and buy a professional photo package of your race. The race is open to runners aged 18 and over, with or without a licence and of any nationality. Official training sessions, training plans and official accommodation are also available for runners travelling to Madrid.Twenty-one kilometres past the Castellana, Puerta de Alcalá, Gran Vía, Puerta del Sol, Neptune, Paseo del Prado and Cibeles.
