Funchal wakes up on a January Sunday with the Atlantic sparkling in the sun and a temperature made for running. At 9:00, on the "island of eternal spring", hundreds of runners set off on the Funchal Half Marathon, 21.097 kilometres between the ocean and the historic heart of Madeira's capital.A half marathon with an Atlantic flavourIn 2027 the Funchal Half Marathon is part of the 12th edition of the city's big running weekend, on Sunday 31 January. It is organised by the Madeira Athletics Association with the support of public and private institutions, and each year attracts more runners from outside the island and from abroad, who take advantage of Madeira's mild winter to run and explore the island.A course by the seaThe route follows Funchal's great coastal avenues and the city centre, with the ocean as a backdrop and the atmosphere of the hotel district and the seafront promenade. The finish is by the Casa da Luz, at Praça da Autonomia, in the heart of the city, where crowds welcome every runner over the final metres.Everything designed around the runnerThe time limit is 3 hours, plenty of time to enjoy the distance at your own pace. Refreshment stations are no more than 5 kilometres apart, and every 2.5 kilometres if the weather is warm, with water and isotonic drinks plus bananas, dried fruit and energy bars. Along the course there is entertainment and first-aid points.Registration includes sports insurance, a personalised bib with MyLaps timing chip, the official T-shirt and a finisher's medal. The organisers transport your bag from the start to the finish area, and Horários do Funchal city buses are free to reach the start. After the race you can download your certificate and see the photos in the official gallery. Trophies go to the top three overall and in each category.RegistrationAthletes in the under-23, senior and masters categories can take part. Prices rise in tiers: €34 until 31 October, €39 until 30 November and €44 until 31 December 2026.
